Not only is the acclaimed developer Square Enix porting its titles to mobile devices, it is also creating new ones. One of which is a spin-off title, Mobius Final Fantasy, which is playable on both Android and iOS, and it can also be downloaded on Steam. With a turn-based tactical battle system, the mechanics are undoubtedly tailor-made for mobile devices. If it’s your first time playing a Final Fantasy, you wouldn’t have any trouble diving right in.
Mobius Final Fantasy lets you fill the shoes of Wol - or a whatever you name him - who is your cliche protagonist suffering from amnesia. You will jump into the world of Paramitia, a queer-looking yet beautifully-crafted world, a regular fixture in Final Fantasy games. Contrary to other similar titles though, the story is a bit lacking. It’s barely comparable to Tidus’ journey in Final Fantasy X or Noctis’ adventures in Final Fantasy XV. In Mobius, you will be told by a voice that one with your character’s name is prophesized to be the “Hero of Light”. From there on out, you will start your long and arduous journey.
What it lacks in plot it makes up for its unique and intricate battle system. It deviates from the usual turn-based mechanics of other Final Fantasy games, yet it maintains certain elements. Despite this, the controls are fairly simple: tapping the screen executes a simple attack. Whenever you manage to land a hit, your enemies release spheres showing elemental power which can be used to launch special attacks. Note that these are equipped by your character via a card system. There is a “break” system, wherein if you deplete an opponent’s break gauge, physical attacks will deal more damage. Special attacks can either be ineffective or extremely damaging, depending on your element-based attacks.
Speaking of elements, there are six which you can equip. These include fire, water, wind, and earth, as well as the rarer ones, light and dark. However, take note that in each job your character assumes, you can only pick three of elements. Don’t worry though, you can pick a job depending on your enemy’s elemental strengths and weaknesses. Moreover, each job and be equipped with four ability cards which allow you to dish out special attacks. There are three basic jobs (onion knight, apprentice mage, neophyte ranger), and they can be upgraded once you manage to secure the prerequisites.
There are barely any exploration aspects in this game, which is a pity considering the surroundings and world they made is absolutely stunning. Instead, you will be able to select where you’re going by picking nodes on the world map. Progressing isn’t simple though: there are requirements you need to obtain, like key items.
Apart from the battle system, one aspect that stands out the most are the graphics. In a Windows PC, you will be treated to a high-resolution 60 FPS version. On a mobile device, everything still looks stellar, despite it being lower in terms of graphics.
Overall, Mobius Final Fantasy is a solid spinoff, definitely something worth playing. Despite lacking a decent plot, the combat system is nothing short of outstanding. Furthermore, the world design is absolutely beautiful, while the monsters are vary from small fries to gargantuan behemoths. It is guaranteed to give you dozens of hours of pure fun and entertainment.
